North Tipperary County Council has been allocated over €10.8 million for regional and local roads according to local TD Máire Hoctor. According to Deputy Hoctor the funding will allow the council to make the necessary repairs to roads damaged by the recent bad weather conditions. The findings resulting from estimates sent by each local authority to the Minister claim that the cost for repairing damage caused by severe weather in recent months approx €180m nationally and not €1 billion as the opposition originally claimed according to Deputy Hoctor.
'The discretion and flexibility given to local authorities on this round of funding is to be welcomed' says Deputy Hoctor. “We have all seen how badly the roads throughout North Tipperary have been hit by the recent bad weather,” said Deputy Hoctor. “There are huge potholes scattered throughout our local road network and they need to be fixed to improve road safety and to prevent cars being badly damaged.” “In framing this year’s funding the Government decided that addressing the problems caused by the bad weather had to be the priority. With this in mind the structure of funding is different to other years. The grants have been simplified and will give more flexibility to the council on how they direct their funding so that they can give priority to badly damaged local and regional roads.”
“The important thing is that the funding is being made available and in these difficult economic times a figure of €10,807,598 represents a significant sum. I hope that the council will now prioritise making the necessary repairs so that the people of North Tipperary can enjoy a more comfortable, safe surface during their various road journeys,” Deputy Hoctor concluded.
