18/02/2010 - Alliance between UL and NUIG Good News For North Tipp Students - HOCTOR

The announcement of a strategic alliance between NUI Galway (NUIG) and the University of Limerick (UL) is good news for North Tipperary students, according to local TD Máire Hoctor.  It will provide greater choices to the students attending either university and will span the key areas of activity including teaching, research, technology transfer, lifelong learning and the provision of services.

The alliance will also have an international dimension through a partnership with Georgia Institute of Technology in the US, through the use of research from both of the Irish universities.

“A huge number of students from North Tipperary go to study in either NUI Galway or the University of Limerick every year,” said Deputy Hoctor.  “By forming this alliance those students will have further educational and research opportunities opened to them and that will have an impact on the standard of academic education available to them.”

“The universities will be joining forces on research initiatives for instance, with a few to providing scientific and technological breakthroughs in the ‘green tech’ sector.  They will also be supporting the country’s efforts to export software solutions by joining forces on software development and internet technology research.”

“Basically it will combine the strengths of both universities and offer more to the current and future students.  This can only help the performance of both universities and I’m sure that will have a major impact for students from North Tipperary long into the future,” Deputy Hoctor concluded.
